When trying to put together an intro piece about Gibbo, it was difficult – because no one could stop laughing at all the hilarious moments that have passed since he became a member back in June 2014. Today it is with great sadness we say goodbye to one of our coaches who is leaving us to seek pastures new on the other side of the world. For many Steve will be remembered for his understated nature and his ability to make the technical look simple. The look of shock on peoples faces as he effortlessly demonstrated a 30inch rebounding box jump at one of his first classes is well remembered amongst the coaches. He will be sorely missed and we wish him well on his travels.

June Member of the Month: Bjorn Grindberg
This month’s Member of the Month is a bittersweet affair. On the one hand, we are celebrating an awesome guy who is so diligent with his shoulder prehab he is almost a permanent fixture on the rig. On the other hand, we have to say goodbye to him at the end of the month as he starts a new Chapter in Berlin. Bjorn is just an absolute pleasure to coach, and a very sweaty man, according to Coach Jamie. Bjorn holds the title of the tallest German in the gym, pipping Phil Studt by at least 4 ft. He has a great sense of humour and always arrives at the gym with a smile – he also brings the coaches coffee which played a key role in his selection as member of the month 😉

SiD 2016
Last year we entered and qualified 2 teams for SiD (Strength in Depth is a 12 person team competition (7 men, 5 women including one male and female master over 40) which takes place in Bath. This year it will be held on the 4th and 5th November.
For 2016 they have just announced the qualifiers will begin in June, two months earlier than last year. Which means we don’t have long to select the teams. Last year we used our in house “Summer Series” competition to select teams. This year as the qualifiers are starting 2 months earlier we will be using the open performances as well as performances in the gym. We will still run the Summer Series competition as our own internal comp but more on that later.

Friday Nights Under the lights are back! Starting this Friday you will be able to do the Open workouts Rx or Scaled at any session during the day. CrossFit’s movement principles are simple:

What this means is, you first have to learn how to perform the skill then after that be able to replicate that skill over and over again and then once that is achieved you can then start to increase the intensity of that skill. But too many times I see members attempting to complete 100’s of DU in workouts after only a small amount of practice.

We are pleased to announce our December Member of the Month is Lisa Jaffrey! Lisa has come on leaps and bounds since joining Blitz in March this year. She came to us as a pure barbell club member- continuing the weightlifting work she had been doing previously but since has also started to attend CrossFit classes – she couldn’t stay away from all the fitness! November Member of the Month: Matt Addis
We are pleased to announce our November member of the month is Matt Addis. The first thing that should be said about Matt is he is dedicated to his training. He makes sure he gets his sessions in every week. When Matt couldn’t get that many pull-ups he would run into the gym on his way home from work a couple of times a week and spend 10 minutes working on them. Matt is on Tier 2, 3 sessions per week, if he knows he can’t use all of his sessions for that week on a coached class he attends open gym. October Member of the Month: Helen O’Brien

Helen came to us by way of her fiancé Lee who by our understanding spent many months convincing her to come down and give Blitz a try. For someone who was so tentative to get started, she hasn’t lacked momentum since. Everything in CrossFit is measurable, observable and repeatable. This mornings workout starts with a specific test before the WOD. We will then repeat this test in 6 weeks. This test looks at only 1 element of CF and that is gymnastics strength/stamina. September Member of the Month: Penny Mulholland
We are pleased to announce our September Member of the Month- Penny Mulholland! Penny first came to Blitz CrossFit in the very early days, she was on one of the first Foundations Courses we ran after opening and has been a consistent Blitzer since early 2014. One word that comes to mind when you talk about Penny is ‘determination’ – no matter what the workout Penny will attack it with 110% effort, and will persist to keep the intensity until it’s over. She always trains hard and brings a positive attitude and smile to every session which makes her a pleasure to coach and compete alongside. We are thrilled to announce the Blitz CrossFit June Member of the Month- Peter Weir. Congratulations Peter!
Peter has been training at Blitz since May 2014, first introduced by his wife Karen – a veteran Blitzer he has now become a fixed part of the ‘daytime’ crew regularly attending both late morning and lunchtime classes. What stands out the most about Peter for us is his diligence in working on weaknesses – which is something that people often shy away from in CrossFit. From an endurance background, flexibility and mobility are not natural strengths but he has consistently worked to improve these areas with great results so far. As a cabin crew member- Kim fits training at Blitz into her jet setting schedule attending a variety of classes including some 6am sunrise sessions and is also a regular member of the lunchtime crew. Over the past year, Kim has gone from strength to strength and despite a considerable bump in the road when she broke both wrists on her birthday (!) earlier this year- she has remained motivated in her training and an absolute pleasure to coach. Blitz Update: We are thrilled to announce we will be hosting an Olympic lifting course on the weekend of the 6th June which is open to Blitz members of all ability levels. The course will be led by Jack Oliver (2012 Olympian at 19 years old!) and his Coach. This will consist of one 3-4 hour session on either Saturday or Sunday – athletes will be allocated into either the beginner or intermediate level group based on movement ability.

Tuesday 3rd Feb – Help For Heroes Charity Day
Next week on Tuesday 3rd February we will be running a charity day for Help For Hereos. This is based around the Titans Tour. The Titans Tour is two of Britain’s best male Olympic Weightlifters touring 14 of the UKs top (I may have slung that word in for good measure!) CrossFit boxes. They are going to be here working out with us between 6 and 8pm.
So how will the day work?
Between 6am -5pm we will be running classes and open gym as normal.
There will be a donation box out during the day, it is also out now so for those who can’t make Tuesday and want to donate please bring money over the weekend or on Monday. We would also strongly suggest that you bring a donation on Tuesday…………..question of the day may be geared towards it!!

These classes are designed to introduce you to and build your confidence in the gymnastic skills, general movements and mobility within CrossFit. No previous gymnastics experience is necessary and classes will be a relaxed low-pressure environment.
Along side the key CrossFit gymnastics shapes and movements like hollow/superman, handstands, pull ups & ring skills, we will also look at skills less likely to appear in a regular CrossFit workout, rolling, cartwheels, double leg circles as these all have key attributes that enhance body control and awareness, both essential elements within CrossFit.

As way of an introduction, on the 18th September this year, I made my semi-professional boxing debut at Clapham in London; fighting for the first time without a head guard, against a seasoned fighter and under pro scoring conditions. Boxing, like Crossfit, is not something that has been in my life very long. In fact, I have been doing both for little over 12 months.

Squats – Probably the most natural movement pattern for man, used to eat and excrete! Just because we’ve got lazy and invented the chair doesn’t mean we can avoid it. The chair has been attributed to an increase in lower back pain and poor ‘Core’ control. So if we want to be healthy we need to squat! Its a bit like Mo Farah turning up to his coach and saying running?! but I ran yesterday and the day before…..

Food for thought gang! Have you got a goal in the gym that you want to achieve (e.g a pull up). What are you doing to achieve it? Success on these sort of goals dictates that you need to focus and put in the extra work. The extra work doesn’t need to be much (5-10mins before or after class) it just needs to happen. If you want help do ask, we want you to achieve these goals and love seeing you achieve them.

It was at Cannons Gym (now Nuffield) where I was going through my usual nondescript globo-gym routine, when Tim first approached me. I remember he introduced himself to me by asking me “what I was doing and why I was doing it?”. I vaguely recall saying that it was a veiled attempt to be fitter and stronger (the answer every personal trainer wants to hear, right?).

The nickname we gave the place when we first visted the warehouse that is now BCF. As our lawyer said “looks like you’ve got yourself a howling draft!”. “If only” was our moniker for the weekend. If only Tim could lift another 5kg in the clean, snatch..well any powerful lift really! If only I could do more than 5 wall balls or thrusters without blowing a gasket (same movement, get a training grip Wardlow), if only Evo was a bit stronger and had been able to have more than 15 minutes sleep, if only we had not had to get up at 5am to get to Wales, if only……we were 20 years younger, we would have won- honest. Either way Tim and I battled to 8th place out of lots in our age divisions and Evo achieved his goal of making the cut in his first comp so not bad really. Fittingly, my own marathon report comes in a little later than Holly’s, which I can only read in awe. Massive congratulations to you Holly. But while I might have taken a bit longer than some, maybe it was even sweeter for it.
My 26.2 mile race began four years ago, when I started training with Tim. By that point, I’d been the girl that sport well and truly forgot for over four decades; whatever anyone’s tale of hopelessness and humiliation on the school playing field, mine will trump it, I guarantee.
