What Is CrossFit?

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program built out of “constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity”.

What does this mean?

Three things which give you the greatest levels of overall fitness:

  • constantly varied – workouts and exercises
  • functional movements – think natural movements like pulling, pushing, squatting, running, jumping and throwing)
  • performed at high intensity – as hard as you are willing to make it

So what’s a coach for?

  • To teach you the skills to perform the functional movements effectively
  • To deliver a programme that ensures competency in everyday movements
  • To get the most out of your body by balancing form and intensity

What makes fitness? Here is CrossFit’s recipe, ‘World Class Fitness in a 100 words,’ developed by Greg Glassman, Founder and CEO of CrossFit.

  •  Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat.
  •  Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J, and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc, hard and fast.
  • Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense.
  • Regularly learn and play new sports
